In last month’s State of the Union address, President Obama claimed that education begins “in our homes and communities” as opposed to in the classroom. Several recent articles, including an article in the Huffington Post titled “It Takes a Community: The Secret to Fixing our Nation’s Schools,” have pointed out the positive effect that community investment has on local schools, including the quality of education, the attendance rate, and the health of their students. Community investment can include public organizations that provide help with homework, sports and other after school activities, social services for families, and youth empowerment programs.
Given how successful such institutions can be, what are some ways that communities can be encouraged and incentivized to provide them and therefore help our students? Do you have ideas? What do you think?
